SUMMER READING: GET YOUR BOOK ON!
Summer means many things to many people, and for the bibliophiles or casual readers among us, it means glorious summer books!
Tastes of summer reading range from light and breezy books that are great for the beach to longer books that might be delved into deep into the night. For a good number of people, the season offers the longest stretch of time away from the job that they have to devote to reading all year long.
You’ll find a comprehensive list of all things books in Syracuse here – from small indies to specialty boutiques to national chains, there is something in this region for every literary preference. Making day trips to find your reading material and then going to your relaxing destination at a beach or a park is a great way to spend a summer day with children, your partner, friends or yourself!
If fiction is your thing, here’s a fabulous list of 25 novels from BookBub.com that are touted here as being on many Book Clubs’ lists for the upcoming summer. (If you’ve never participated in a Book Club, it’s another interesting way to explore the written word. Themes like Military History, Sports, Travel, Biography, or Mystery are good ways to give focus to a start-up club.) The novels on BookBub’s list include titles that are currently available or ones slated for a summer release. You can grab the first three on the list right now, and each is a very good bet to be engaging. Paula Hawkins, author of the immensely popular The Girl On The Train, offers Into The Water. It revolves around the dark history of a town’s river whose waters have served as the last resting place for a number of people. Fredrik Backman is a New York Times best-selling author from Sweden. His book A Man Called Ove was adapted into an art-house theater hit movie last year. Beartown, his latest novel, focuses on a rural town whose junior hockey team has a shot at a national championship, but pressures lead to a criminal act that leaves the town torn apart. Master-storyteller Dennis Lehane – author of Mystic River, Gone Baby Gone, and Shutter Island among many others – has the novel Since We Fell on the market. It’s a psychological drama that rotates around a journalist who has suffered an on-air breakdown.
Okay – those three all have dark undertones – or overtones! Here are 30 more books to choose from that are compelling but many are more suited for light beach reading.
Let yourself get lost in some pages this summer – find a classic you’ve never picked up or want to revisit; choose subject matter that is right up your alley or maybe something that is very different from what your usual tastes are.
